If your ever visiting San Diego in the spring make sure you squeeze these magical 12 acres in your itinerary! Between the cherry blossom trees, the wisteria and many other stunning plants at full bloom its certainly one attraction you don't want to miss! The garden was created as an expression of friendship between San Diego & its sister city Yokohama. It represent two different cultures using traditional Japanese techniques & adapting it to San Diego climate & environment.
Full Bloom Everything in this lovely garden was absolutely blooming during our visit, we had just came from a lovely brunch at Cafe Chloe & were delighted to had made time to check out this charming attraction in Balboa Park! If you haven't been to Balboa Park it would be fair to say that your going to want a map, balboa park is a 1,200-acre urban cultural park. With endless amounts of museums, shops, gardens, and even a zoo. Therefore unless you want to risk finding yourself at a lost, do yourself a favor and find a map and find your way to this marvelous garden.
Wisteria Wisteria also more formally known as Wisteria Sinensis, its truly one of the most beautiful plants I have ever seen! This miraculous plant can reach 20-30ft in height, making it the ideal plant to decorate a pagoda with. (such as the one above) Wisteria often blooms twice a year, once in the spring & then again in the summer. I couldn't fight the urge to smell them, so I got up close & personal for a glorified whiff of its sweet scent & boy was I amazed with the fragrance coming from the plant! If I had to compare it to another scent , it would probably be gardenia but with a much lighter scent.
Pond No Japanese garden would be complete without a pond full of Koi fish, these particular fishes were hand selected in Japan just for this very pond. Their located in a waterfall pond behind the wisteria plant. Did you know that Koi fish have the life expectancy of 25 to 35 years? Which is pretty amazing for a fish of that size! Make sure to pay them a visit during your stroll in the Japanese garden, they will certainly bring you a sense of tranquility!
Bonsai Tree Garden Another tradition in any Japanese garden are of course Bonsai Trees! Bonsai trees are the art of growing miniature trees in small pots, although this art form originated in China it was perfected in Japan! if you want to learn more make sure to inquire when the garden will be having another one of their many accredited classes. The best thing about the Japanese garden is they offer many educational opportunity for those whom are interested in creating a Japanese garden of their own!
Cherry Blossoms The garden is a series of winding paths filled with blooming cherry blossoms & other traditional Japanese plants. It the ultimate place for a romantic stroll in the spring,or even a picnic! Did you know that having a picnic under a cherry blossom tree is a Japanese tradition? So pack a light lunch and enjoy It in one of the most magical places in San Diego!
