If your an art fanatic, make sure not to leave the capitol of South Carolina without visiting their art museum. It's one of our favorite museums in South Carolina, because of its activities for the entire family. It truly an institution filled with inspiration, and something for everyone to enjoy!
Dale Chihuly is my all time favorite artist, his work is simply mesmerizing. The way he sculpts his masterpieces using heat and glass is something you have to witness for your self. I wasn't expecting to find a piece from his collection at this museum, but it was a pleasant surprise as always!
I have been to countless art museums across the US, and I can honestly say none of them have a program better for kids then this museum! Kids get to pick up their art explorer back pack at the front desk. The back pack comes loaded with fun activities for kids such as: sketch book and color pencils, picture book, gallery hunt,a unique bingo game, and even a set of binoculars for kids to take a closer look at the tiny details. Needless to say this museum made it a point, to find a way to sparks a child interest in art. There is no better way to grasp a better understanding of something then hands on, and this museum certainly achieves that with this interactive back pack!
They offer a wide variety of artwork, from contemporary & modern to mixed media, renaissance etc. There is little you won't find here! You can truly spend an entire afternoon here admiring all the work they have up for display. They also feature a wide range of photography that will leave you wanting to capture moments of your own, its an inspirational experience to wanders through these halls and see the work of so many gifted artists!
As if the explorer back pack program isn't enough, this museum wanted to create a space for kids to let go, and well be kids! This play room is filled with different activities for children to play with such as:craft section,a chalk wall, and other hands on activities for kids to enjoy! You can even create your own fish and hang it on the wall!
This museum offers a large selection of sculptures as well. All of them varying in era and in style. Most of these pieces will simply leave you in awe, because of all the details the artist applied to their work. Make sure to take the time to read the descriptions of the sculpture. That will help you understand the era it was created, and hopefully make you better grasp what inspired the artist to create it!
